the definiton of celebrity is someone who is famous, well known, or too much talked about. (World Book Dictionary), so in that context yes, Hitler is a celebrity. However society has a more narrowed version of the word celebrity as someone who is 'celebrated' through their words or actions. therefore we more often assign celebrity status to those people who have made positive contributions to our lives.i guess this called be clarified by calling him an infamous celebrity as he is indeed well known for beig extremely wicked and for being a notorious public disgrace

I don't think he's a "celebrity" in the usual meaning of the word. We tend to think of celebrities are people who, one way or another, entertain us., e.g., Anna Nicole Smith, Monica Lewinsky, etc. (even if they only entertain us by being famous for being famous). American's don't tend to apply the label "celebrity" to murderers -- you never hear about Ted Bundy as a celebrity.

Seems like a better word for Hitler and his ilk is "notorious."

Well, he was responsible for the deaths of over 60 million people, so that tends to make him somewhat well known.
