I work on checkouts in a supermarket and recently they have banned us from taking a bottle of water onto the checkout with us. Is there any law that protects our right to have water with us? Or is it their right to ban it?

Actually yes there is a law (well a regulation not an Act) and I quote from it:
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

Drinking water
22.—(1) An adequate supply of wholesome drinking water shall be provided for all persons at work in the workplace.
(2) Every supply of drinking water required by paragraph (1) shall—

(a) be readily accessible at suitable places; and
(b) be conspicuously marked by an appropriate sign where necessary for reasons of health or safety.

(3) Where a supply of drinking water is required by paragraph (1), there shall also be provided a sufficient number of suitable cups or other drinking vessels unless the supply of drinking water is in a jet from which persons can drink easily.

It does sound unusual but as your employer, they have the right to make it a work place condition.
My guess is they don't want the water near the electronic, equipment.
Ask your supervisor for an explanation, and see if there is a place a few steps away where you and the other operators can keep them

I have only seen it in one supermarket and the girls there have decorated their bottles with a hair ribbon or something the will know is their.

Hope this helps.

I think it is morally wrong but the company must be in the right as they would not have imposed such a silly rule.

I don't think I could sit there until break time without a few swigs of water because talking to people at the checkout must make your mouth dry.

In Court three is generally water for staff & guests so if it was taken to court I think the company may lose.

I suggest that you speak to your manager & state that you need water in between breaks because satisfying customers needs, makes your mouth dry when you answer them.

There is no law stating that you have to have your water with you all the time. There are laws in place on how often you need a break etc for refreshments.

Perhaps if there is alot of you at work then maybe you could try persuading them otherwise?

I dread to think of. i will in simple terms think of a few bloke saying "so long hun, i'm in simple terms off to get pi**ed at artwork - do not wait up!"

as long as they give you regular breaks and you have no medical conditions that makes you need the water then yeah, they can tell you no water.
