Well the main difference is that the Indy 500 is a race and NASCAR is a racing league. NASCAR stands for National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing and the Indy 500 is run by the IRL (Indy Racing League). Maybe you meant to ask what was the difference between the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500.

Indy cars are faster, use exotic engine and is virtually world wide. More foreign cars and drivers compete in Indy type (Formula 1, champ cars, etc.) for much bigger prize money. Indy 500 used to be THE race of the year but NASCAR became more popular because they looked more like American factory produced cars, and that is what they started out as stock cars. You used to be able to go to the dealer on Monday and buy the same car, usually with 2 or more carburetors, and drive them home, then go racing with it.
Oh, for the glory days again!
