you should have some sort of special way that has to do with the way he asked you out, what happened on your first date, something he likes, etc.

For my 27th b/day, my 17yr. old g/f gave me an antique gold
pocket watch...Engraved on the watch was my name & her name.
Her name with my surname...
I asked her to marry me about 2 minutes later..
We were married about 6 months later after her 18th b/day...
Our first child 2 1/2 yrs. later...

You should NOT ask your boyfriend to marry you. That is completely backwards. HE should ask you if he is inclined to do so.
By taking his role, you may sending him running for the hills.
