Open up a command prompt in Windows or a terminal in unix and type
"java -version"
This will return the java version you currently have running, if there is one running.

Java is several things. You can generally tell if you have the java runtime by looking in the right lower corner of your screen. There should be a little coffee cup. This is loaded by your browser to run java applets.
Also Java compiler/interpreter is generlly at c:\j2sdk.#.##.## or c:\jdk#.##.##
Where the # signs represent the java version.

Go to start --> settings --> Control Panel. Add/remove then look in there if you see java then you have java

Go to start --> settings --> Control Panel. Then look for a Java icon in there. If you dont have it, no icon will appear.

Look in control panel, it is usually listed as it's own separate icon. You can always download the latest version at http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
