I have been doing surveys from different sites for over a year now! The majority of sites that I belong too, will either pay you monthly (Paypal) or send you a monthly check! I belong too 3 sites that cost nothing to join (I just sign in their home page every now and then) and 1 site that I belong too, I paid a small fee to become part of a focus group, I made back my money after doing 2 surveys..
