Basically, the government is proposing that to encourage people to give up their cars, motorists should pay for every mile they travel by car.
For example, on a quiet country road, you might be charged as little as 2p per mile, whereas on something like a busy motorway, you could be charged say, 50p per mile. At the end of the month you would receive a statement informing you how much you owe.
As yet, it is not clear whether or not road tax and fuel tax would be scrapped, but it would surely have to be if the scheme were to come in. Also, there have been 1.7m signatures on the No 10 website petition against the charging, and it looks like the whole thing might actually be shelved, such is its unpopularity.

Drivers could pay up to £1.34 a mile in "pay-as-you go" road charges under new government plans.
The transport secretary said the charges, were aimed at cutting congestion.
Every vehicle would have a black box to allow a satellite system to track their journey,(which YOU have to pay for) with prices starting from 2p per mile in rural areas. 2p a mile in RURAL areas. A lot more on other roads!! One has to remember, each year this is likely to be increased in the budget, along with petrol prices and goodness knows what else.
Those interested in signing the petition against these measures can sign the epetition on the Government website.............hurry, it closes at midnight tonight!!

Tony Blair is going to kidnap your children and hold them hostage. He'll then personally check where you drive your car and you'll be charged £50 per mile. You won't even be allowed to use your car unless you give an illegal immigrant a lift to cash an enormous giro. It's going to be backdated to 1972 and your first bill will arrive next week. Blacks and Asians will, of course, be exempt.
Sign the petition at once!

Tony Blair & his best mates are going to start charging motorists for the niles that they drive commencing in 4 years time.
Him & his cronies will share the proceeds to send their children to private schools, have more holidays in Florida, buy more expensive houses in London & Brighton etc.
Blair had a petition on NO 10's web site & after a short while I & over 1 million other people logged on objecting & he is going to ignore it.

So nothing to do with an EU directive designed to subsidize the Galileo satellite navigation system then?
So if you drive down an empty country road you pay a small fee for moving, but if you're stationary in a city traffic jam with your engine running you don't pay anything, because that's congestion see?

Nice summary, Hannibal. It's not too late if you're interested
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/
They calculated 4 people yesterday. There will be some people who are better off. In yesterday's example it was the business man, who drives a lot on motorways off-peak (they type of guy, who gets these kind of expenses paid by his company any way), the big loosers are people, who might not travel far, but have to go through towns in rush-hour - like us working mums, dropping 3 kids off in different schools before going to work...

Daft thing it, it was only a proposal to be considered and perhaps trialled. sadly greed, short term self interest and sheer gullibility led to over a million people putting their name on a petition.
