why do the blades that they have on them are slanted and not ya know like a square?

A slanted blade cuts more like a slicing sword and is more effective than a straight edged axe which chrushes the neck of it's victim. The first guillotine had a straight or axe shaped blade. However during trials on cadavers it became clear that a better solution to the straight blade had to be found.

It was discovered that the cut was much more efficient when it entered the neck at an angle. You have probably observed much the same principal at work if you've ever sliced a loaf of bread.

because it has to cut through bone, which is much easier at a slant

Actually, it's spelled "guillotine"
and is pronounced with the "l's", silent.
