The term Intellectual Capital is used in two ways. One is what your examples represent, and are about establishing property rights or ownership of knowledge. It would cover anything that could be copyrighted or patented (drugs, software, inventions, lyrics, paintings, novels, etc). The second usage is the extra value that a worker has because he possess knowledge. In this sense the cost of a college education is an investment in intellectual capital that will pay returns and increase productivity just like an investment in a machine would.
