I heard that Einstein said that an object gains mass as it acceoerates, or did he mean that only if the object goes at the speed of light?

It's not that it gains mass...it gains inertia and it gets harder and harder to acellerate. In this case mass and inertia work the same way.
The true amount of matter that makes up the object (mass)doesn't increase. It just gets harder and harder to move any faster.
