I believe it is an attepmt at personal humility. Example: "When left to my own devices I can screw up a 2 car funeral." It is a statement of admission of imperfection.

It means,like in the song, "I was left to my own devices", i was left to go/do what i please when i please to do so. You are now left to yourself,to do what you want, when you want. The person left the singer,so now the singer can do what they want w/out the person telling them what to do.
