you should definitely take part! if you don't have to learn it by heart, there is very little that can go wrong, and as you say it's a short poem, if it DOES go wrong, the embarrassment won't last so long! (don't worry, joking, you'll be fine) go for it, girl! :-)

tell us what happens, 'kay?

Don't be pressured into doing it if you really don't want to but it is amazing the admiration you get from others when you do something like that in public. Nerves are a problem if you let them be. It is natural for all performers to be nervous - even the famous ones. Plenty of deep breathing before you go "on". Breathing is the key - you can be very relaxed while reading as long as you have enough breath. I used to go for a brisk walk or jump on atrampoline for 10 - 15 minutes before going on stage.
Once you have done it you will feel great. Go for it kid!! Break a leg!!

Why would WE know whether or not you should do it? Do you want to? If so, do it. If not, dont. This isnt high-energy physics here, just make a decision and pretend yahoo answers doesnt exist. You overcome nervousness by doing the thing that makes you nervous over and over until youre no longer nervous about it.

Definitely go for it. Not much can go wrong if you're reading a poem, just be confident and go out there.
