I used to be mad at this too, until I did my research.

Black history month started out as Black history week, which was randomly chosen in the month of February. I wish they had anticipated that it would become a month and picked a month with more days!

When I was teaching, I used to tell my students that I could not possibly teach them everything they needed to know, but I also could not stop them from learning anything they wanted to know.

Education is not limited to a school room or to a semester or a month. You can learn anytime and in any place, with or without the help of a teacher.

If you want to know more about black history, begin with the writings of Frederick Douglass. His words are as inspiring today as they were when he wrote them. Read what he has written and share what you learn with others.

Why don't you do what I do and celebrate Italian history 365 days a year. Everyday I try to find out something about my anscestors I didn't know. I don't need the government to allow me to celebrate my heritage. Hell, there isn't even an Italian history month...why I aughta.......LOL

Because February only has 28 days.

But more importantly, we don't get a "White History" month or an "Hispanic History" month to celebrate. And we shouldn't! The only way we will stop all of this nonsense is to begin accepting that we are the HUMAN RACE. Eliminate everything that celebrates racism (segregation solely based on the color of your skin or your national heritage) and keeps us feeling like it's me against you.

"In 1926 Woodson organized the first annual Negro History Week, which took place during the second week of February. Woodson chose this date to co-incide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln - two men who had greatly impacted the black population.

Over time, Negro History Week evolved into the Black History Month that we know today - a four-week-long celebration of African American History."
