arrested him, they were in the arrested man's bathroom when this happened. The police man had a submachine gun with the safety catch off there were at least three policemen plus the suspect in this small room,it makes you wonder what carnage could have happened if he had fired. He has already stated that he doesn't know why he didn't fire.Shouldn't he be taken off firearm duties until he has been re-assessed

Look what happened with Jean Charles Menezes (I'm not sure I've spelt his name correctly) who was shot on the tube and then it turned out it was all an accident.

I don't blame the guy for not shooting. When in doubt, don't. That's what keeps UK society semi-civilised, at least.

I think had he fired then there would have been a reason to remove his firearm, the fact that he did not under the conditions is to his credit. The suspect was in a dark shower cubilcle wearing a rucksack which the officer believed to be a bomb. He said the man reached for his chest and he threw an object at him and his colleagues - later this turned out to be a bit from a mobile phone but he didn't know that at the time. All his training must have kicked in at 100mph for him to remain composed and not shoot in what musy have been a very tense moment. The adrenalin must have been gushing through him. Ok, so he "doesn't know" what stopped him but my guess is that it was his training just kicked in and kept him sane at the right moment.

Absolutely. As long as hes not putting others lives in direct danger. But if it would be alot safer to try and end this chase than to let it end the way this suspect has in mind, they can take action. Then there is also the chance that they are told to call of the chase so this suspect slows down and it minimizes the danger to innocent people. But they dont normally call it off unless there is a helicopter nearby, following this suspect.
