You are right, it is awesome! I fought at my University against Native mascots. It is great. I have responded to so many posts on here about the ignorance of mascots and the pain they cause. It is so sick that people will fight so hard to keep a mascot. Where are these people when we are fighting for human rights? And why would they fight so hard to keep a mascot when we as Native people say get rid of it. These people really think they should have more of a say than actual Native people? That is White priveledge. Well, I think it is awesome. And if anyone wants information on why mascots are demeaning I'm willing to answer the questions as long as you are willing to discuss it in a civil manner. NatashaChandiJoseph@gmail.com

I never knew much about it, but I am glad...a stereotypical representation of human beings and certain cultures should never be turned into a freakin mascot! It's dehumanizing...

I have hard the same said of the "Mardi Gras Indians" that dressing up is honoring Native people...as if...mocking people is not the way to honor anyone. More like an excuse to cover their butts.

I disagree. They were showing respect to the spirit of the Illini Nation. It was not a disparaging representation like chief Wahoo for the Cleveland Indians. The Seminole Nation has approved the mascot for the Florida State Seminoles who rides on the field and throws a spear into the field. They feel it honor thier ancestors. It's a shame more people could not have viewed the Illinois mascot in theis manner. What' next the Fighting Irish?

I didn't think it was demeaning at all, neither did my grandmother or grandfather who were both 1/2 native american and attended U of I.
It was a proud warrior symbol of a proud university.
At the next game, I'm handing out headdresses I got at an online shop---I have over 100 of them and lets see what the NCAA has to say about THAT.
