Yes, they serve lots of good purposes, but they like every other group gets self serving with power. Not far from where I live, they filed a law suit to get a plaque with the Ten Commandments removed from a public park where it has rested for over 50 years. Not one resident of the area complained, and over 500 complained against the lawsuit filed by the ACLU, but the town had to remove the plaque. Wherever you stand on such an issue, it should be the locals who make that decision, not some group who knows they can bury people or governments under mountains of legal debt. When rights are threatened, or the little guy needs help, they are great, but when they decide what we can and cant do, we have problems.

The ACLU/NAMBLA connection that people throw about as a reason to hate the ACLU is not correct.
The ACLU does have the same views that NAMBLA does. The ACLU only protects the right that NAMBLA has to express those views. Here is a link to what the ACLU has to say about the case.
http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/protest/11289prs20000831.html
Also, people will say the the ACLU is trying to ban religion or christmas. That is not true. Once again, this is what the ACLU has to say about it.

I think that the ACLU is a great organization. They work to make sure the government respects the rights of the citizens. All of the citizens. I view the ACLU as one of the checks and balances on the US government.

I don't mind the ACLU, a lot of the stuff they stand up for I disagree with, but we live in a free society and the ACLU is an organization that fights to keep it that way.

First, check their website at www.aclu.org....then have a look at this website:
http://midtopia.blogspot.com/2006/03/aclu-and-religious-liberty.html
ACLU has been around 100 years defending your right to free speech, freedom of the press, the right to dissent, free access, Freedom of Information Act.
Just because the ACLU may make a decision you don't agree with doesn't mean they are in the wrong. You need to thank goodness that there is somebody keeping an eye on ALL our freedoms in this country. If they, and organizations like them, weren't around, you wouldn't have the right to vote or work. You wouldn't be paid on a level with men, you would have no say in your reproductive rights, you would find it very difficult to obtain a divorce, car insurance, life insurance...all because you are a woman.
Do a little research....

The only people who like the ACLU are pedophiles who want abortions for their 14 year old daughters. It's sad to what depths the ACLU has sunk. Like the labor unions, they did good work when they started, but I think their time has passed.

Just like the unions, ACLU has a love-hate relationship with the general public. Those who benefit from these organizations love them and those that don't, hate them.

The ACLU is the biggest threat to the American way of life right now. They fight for pedophiles rights to have child porn. They represent NAMBLA, The North American Man Boy Love Association. The people are dangerous and should be wiped out as an organization.

The ACLU is one of those special organizations that do have the interest of people in mind, but sometimes (in fact quite often) take it too far.
Their initial goal is to keep the government in check, and more importantly to protect the rights of any minority not currently popular (a nice way of saying they are hated) from the majority who considers them wrong. For example, whether you believe homosexuality to be right or wrong; the constitution is written in such a way that they are protected. The constitution allows them to be gay and to be openly so, just so long as they don't do homosexual acts publicly (which heterosexuals are placed under the same code, a heterosexual male and female are not allowed to do anything strongly sexual in public). In essence, the constitution is written in a way that homosexuals should have the same protection as heterosexuals, and allowed to do the same things and barred from the same things as heterosexuals.
However, the majority in this case is against allowing gays to be gay. The majority considers gays to be morally wrong and should be outlawed. Notice that I said the majority, not everybody. Whether you are in the majority or not, in this case the constitution is with the minority (that gays should be allowed to be gay and have the same protection as the heterosexuals). And this can't be argued or there wouldn't be any "need" for an amendment to "fix" this (quotations are placed in to show some agree and others don't about whether an amendment banning gays should be made).
The ACLU is there to protect homosexuals in this manner. To uphold the constitution. But since this goes against the morals of some (and in fact the majority), the ACLU tends to be hated and many try to get rid of it, or at least limit its capabilities. But they are upholding the constitution in this case.
But the ACLU often goes too far. They do protect the First Amendment rights for many (including black people, women, gays, etc.), but often try to do this at the expense of the majority (white people, men, Religious right, etc.).
In my opinion, the ACLU should continue to fight for rights for the minority that is being oppressed. Whose rights are being trampled on and taken away from them. But as long as the fight is only in words, and that the rights aren't being taken away, the ACLU should stay out of things. Jerry Falwell wants to attack homosexuals as wrong, he has the right. If homosexuals want to attack Jerry Falwell as wrong, they have the right. Of course both sides only have the right as long as the fight remains verbal, and then the people who have heard both sides can make up their own mind. But if Congress passes a law banning gay rights, or women's rights, or black rights, or anyone else's rights (including the right for the majority to say--and only say--that the minority is wrong), then the ACLU steps in and is right for doing so.
The ACLU must be careful to not step too far, but they are protecting all of us from losing our rights. Because if one group losing their rights is acceptable, then isn't it acceptable if another group does. And then another group. And sooner or later it will be your group (whether you are white, black, male, female, Christian, Muslim, Atheist, or who knows what else); and nothing can be done if you didn't fight for the others when it was their turn.

The ACLU is a horrible organization founded by known communists. They do not have the best interests of America at heart, only the best interests of their organizations agenda.
