I know that eating tuna fish is bad for already pregnant women due to the mercury levels in the fish, and that it can cause birth defects in the fetus/baby.

But what I really want to know is, if I eat a lot of tuna fish now, when I wish to try to have a child, to conceive, will it still be a problem? Will the mercury cause infertility? I can't really find anything specific in my searches online, so maybe a website or two would help.

What is the reccommended weekly ounce ratio of tunafish consumption? It's not like I'm binging on the stuff, but in my incredibly busy, on-the-run, no-time-for-a-proper-meal schedule, those non-drain pouches of tunafish are VERY convienant and filling, and (supposedly) healthy. Is once every week or so too much?

What other foods should "trying to conceive" women watch out for?

If you haven't already conceived, don't worry about it, my Dr. told me to limit the amount of tuna, but I didn't have to eliminate it completely. In the pouches (5 oz.) of tuna is perfect, I just wouldn't go past once or twice a week. Once you get prego...then avoid honey, because of the bacteria from bees( they say for children under one, but to be on the safe side I would while pregnant) shell fish, any kind of sushi or lunch meats (again, processed cold cuts have potential to carry harmful bacteria).Good luck to you! I would go ahead, if you haven't already, start taking pre-natals, and folic acid.

Ok let me help you here. It seems like you are in a catch 22. Ok you like fish. Dont eat a whole lot to try to conceive. That is an old wives tale. If you have eaten a whole lot of fish before you plan to conceive take an over the counter pill for heavey metals cleansing to rid your body of any unneccesary mercury. For the saftey of your baby I would not try it.
