.... for example? seeing as i was born during the 80s, 1981 to be exact in london in the uk, so therefore being born in that decade does that make me third generation chinese british or english? it's just that i have heard of people saying second, third generation, in reference to people, but i haven't been able to figure out what years constitute second generation and what years for the third. can someone put me out of my misery? thanks

Generation is how many levels of family you have had in the country. So, if you were born in the UK, but your family came from another country (lets say Italy), then you are first generation English. If you have parents that were born in the UK, then you would be second generation and if you had grandparents that were born in the UK, then you would be considered 3rd generation.
I hope that answers your question!

If you were born in England and both of your parents were born in a country or countries other than England, you are of the 1st generation of English born people in your family.

If your children are born in England, they would be of the 2nd generation.

If your grandchildren are born in England, they would be of the third generation.
