The Federal law has what is known as The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act which addresses more serious computer crimes directed at financial institutes.

However, you own state, and mine included have laws concerning the illegal access to personal data maintained on private computers.

In my own state the law is titled "Offenses against intellectual property" which is classified as either a Class "A" Misdemeanor or a Class "C" Felony depended upon the type of activity that transpires while the offense is occurring.

You should research the "Anti-Hacking Law " for better information or contact your local District Attorney or law enforcement office!

Best wishes!

It is illegal. There are not varying degrees of illegality.

You cannot hack into your spouse's email, your teachers email, your colleagues email, etc. Nor should you be hacking into anyone's email.

It is illegal. But you need to talk to an attorney, because the jurisdictional restrictions on internet/e-mail use are strange.
