go to download.com and download the program hijackthis run the program click scan only, copy the results to an email and send it to me at ns_comp_tech@yahoo.ca. This is a list of what is running on start up. I can then look at the list and make recommendations. Without knowing what you are loading i cant recommend anything. Also is your HDD light blinking constantly when you are at the computer? this could indicate lack of RAM. To determine if you have a shortage of RAM in windows XP press CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the taskmanager, click on the performance tab and compare PF Usage (IN MB) with Physical Memory (in KB so divide by 1000). if close or the PF Usage is higher that you need a RAM upgrade.

This is a common concern for PC users. Here is a suggestion to reduce the start up programmes:
1. Go to start, click on run
2. Type in msconfig and enter key
3. once msconfig window is open click on the start-up tab
4. From that tab uncheck programmes you dont want to run when the computer starts up. (be very careful at this point as unchecking certain programmes will cause your pc to malfunction but you can always go back to msconfig and make changes.)
5. your PC will need to restart for the changes to take effect.
Goodluck

There are many things you can do to speed up your computer as well as getting rid of start up processes. Try deleting some of the shortcuts on your desktop, and remove as many programs as possible in the add/remove manager. I don't know a lot about computers i'm only a teenager but i hope this helps! =]

u can search for the processes that are there in ur task manager on google, and mostly u will find which application they are from. if u dont need those applications, uninstall them or remove from the startup. many people have database servers running in the background that they dont even need. check for those.

good luck.

if you need all these processes, maybe you should concider purchasing some more ram. beware of websites that are concidered unsafe, these will add so much crap to your computer, stay on yahoo, it's safe!! try the disk cleanup on your computer and also check your "add ons"--this is where i had my big problem for quite awhile, then i found that and it's solved!!

Since you are not sure what's what, use this method to be safe.

Drop the names of each startup processes into google.

It will tell you what they do.

If it is not for windows, hardware or your network you can nerf it.

Good Luck :-)

If you google the processes, there are a couple of sites that tell you what each one is. That'll help you decide which to trash.
