This is just a part of a list I have. I copied and pasted it for you. If you want the whole thing, email me and I will send it to you. The pleco is about half way down.

If you give him some driftwood to chew on and lots of veggies like cooked zucchini, carrots and peas without the shell, he will probably last another 7 or 8 years.

Good luck.

Pearl Danio - 5 years
Pearl Gourami - 4 years
Pictus Catfish - 8 years
Piranha - 10 years
Platy - 3 to 5 years
Pleco - 7 to 15 years
Rafael Catfish - 7 to 15 years
Rainbow Shark - 4 to 10 years
Rams - 4 years
Rasboras - 5 to 10 years
Red Eye Tetra - 5 years
Red Rainbow - 5 years
Red Tailed Catfish - 15 years

As the others have said, it really depends on how you care for them. In a good tank environment where they aren't being overly stressed, over or underfed, the water's relatively clean and at the right temperature...they can live for many years and become quite huge! The owner of a store I frequent has a common pl*ccy in one of his tanks that could give a pond catfish a run for its money...it's about 18-20" long and must weight at least 2lbs. He's had it for over 10 yrs, not sure how much longer before then. So...no, it's not necessarily living beyond its years, but it does go to show you must being doing a good job with your tank! :) Happy fishkeeping.

With good care you may expect more than 20 years from a common pleco. Some of the breeders in FL claim to have had breeding stock even longer than that.

My friend had one for 15 years. He lived from a baby in a 10 gallon tank all the way to his death. he was about 2 inches when he got him and he was 11" when he died. he grew to be 11" in the 10 gallon tank. he couldn't even move around. his mom fed him cucumber slices every other day and he would eat the middles out and leave the outside peel.

The common pleco is a sturdy catfisg that lives in flordia and south america. They can get to be 18inches long, and live up to 35years in captivity if treated well enough.

I swear those things live forever. I had one that lived for about 10 years before it died. It must have been about 8-10 inches long.
