Cancun is a very clean safe place to go. I've been there many times and it is a lot of fun. Keep in mind that tourism is the main/only industry in the region with multi billion dollar investments, don't you think they will do their best to keep you coming back? That includes cleanliness, tourism awareness in the local population, education and safety. I'm a hospitality consultant and have studied Cancun for a while. A lot of people there speak English and are very friendly, of course, remember to be cautious since your out of your home country, don't do what you wouldn't do here and you'll be fine. Maybe your co-worker is jealous? Bring back some nice pictures and show them to him!

You will love Cancun. It's not dirty. They have some of the nicest resorts and some shopping malls are very upscale. They have hotels like the Ritz, Fiesta Americana Coral Beach and LeBlanc all 5 star hotels. The hotel zone in Cancun is not dirty.
Trust me on that.
Don't listen to the guy at work, he hasn't been to Cancun especially making a statement like that.
Have a great vacation and be sure to take a ton of pictures and show that "guy" at work all the beautiful beaches and hotels.
Happy Travels

sounds like your coworker is speaking about something he doesn't know (why didn't you ask him what he meant by that?). a lot of people have a misconception that anything south of the USA is "dirty", and these are usually people who have never travelled, or who travelled once, saw something they didn't like, and decided that the whole world out there is ugly and bad, and they'd rather live in their small world (anyone could say that if they went to certain parts of New York City for that matter, or Paris!). Go to Cancun and enjoy it-- it's beautiful!! you'll find everything, from dirt cheap establishments (food, shops, etc), to full jaw-dropping luxury services, if you can afford them. Cancun is lovely.... loved by tourists and mexicans alike.

Cancun is one of the most popular beach resorts in the world. It is not dirty. It's by far my least favorite destination in Mexico, but certainly not for that reason. I suppose if you search hard enough, you can find a dirty part of every city, town or village in the world. Go, have a great time, and don't forget to write me a postcard.

Bet you the guy from work has never even been close to Cancun. Mexico is different than the U.S., including sanitation, culture, climate, people, transportation, traditions, food, etc. etc. That's why we go on vacations, huh.

I didn't find it dirty. The hotel zone is not dirty, the city itself may be a little dirty but not really.
