I was discussing a novel I read with my friend, and said 'I found a lot of truth' in that book. He said 'There is no truth!' He meant everything is based upon perception. Is the statement meaningless since if there really is no truth, you can't rely on his statement being true?

I do see your logic..... a general statement that there is no truth is indeed a logical contradiction in itself!!

No it is not contradictory. There is more than one meaning to truth. The truth he was referring to is absolute truth. Whereas the truth you were referring to is the relative truth as in true or false.
