older people often die soon after there spouse dies. this can be said to be a broken heart. i think it sure is a factor but i think that the desire to live leaves them because they just don't have enough interaction with others. loneliness is known to cause death indirectly even in animals. monkeys have been raised in separate cages and the ones that were alone died much sooner then the ones with a partner.
the exact cause of death is never listed as a broken heart but if you were to ask the doctors who knew the person i am sure most would say that loneliness played a huge part in the persons death. single people not ever married or living with someone die earlier on average as well.

I'm sure it is. Husbands & wives, who have had a very close relationship when one of them dies, can often pine for their loved ones so much it causes them to get so ill they can't cope with being without their spouses, & they feel life's not worth living & give up.

Yes i think thats what happens with old couples, when one dies the other often dies soon, even though they can appear in good or better health than the partner.
