First thing you need to do is involve your kids in the project. Let them have a say in how it is designed. They will cherish this time with you for the rest of their lives. I know I do.

Now, contrary to what others are saying, you don't need a tree that has level branches. Sometimes a treehouse has more character when they don't.

Now if you are trying not to damage the tree too much you will need to use legs. I would recommend 4x4 posts that are pressure treated. These need to be anchored into the ground with concrete. The depth of the concrete into the earth should be at least 12" deep unless of course you are in very cold climate then you may need to go deeper.

Another alternative to having posts is to anchor the floor back into the tree. This can be done by attaching legs to the floor at a 45 degree angle back to the tree.

Due to the material being exposed to the weather, use Pressure Treated Material. It does not deteriorate as fast as other material.

For the floor I would recommend using 2x6's. This will hold up the decking. Just don't make the floor too big or 2x6's won't hold up to a number of kids. These 2x6's should be framed on end 16" on center. You can then put 2x4's or 2x6's for the floor (decking). Make sure you space these about 1/8" apart. This will allow for rain to go through and for the wood to expand and contract with the weather.

The floor is the biggest part of the tree house. After that it's up to the imagination.

Here are some ideas to include in your treehouse:

Ladder
Fireman's Pole
Window
Pulley system with old bucket
Guardrail (A must)

The tree house doesn't even have to have a roof. Your kids will love it. Don't forget to include them on the design. You may have to guide them in a direction that you think you can build. But don't forget to include them.

Look for a tree that has two THICK, somewhat level branches.

You can make the level more even by nailing wood blocks to the lower branch. Start by using a piece of 2x4, then adding additional pieces of 2x4 until you can put in a beam that spans the void between the branches so that it's fairly level. Work from the tree trunk outward, that way you provide support for yourself as you go "out on a limb".

Be sure to make the floor solid. I reccommend you use a grid-like pattern. Make a box out of vertical 2x4s, and then use joist hangers at even intervals. Use screws. They are less likely to give way suddenly.

Once you have the floor joists in place, screw in a 3/4" piece of plywood cut to size. Floor done.

The walls are fairly easy once you have the floor in place. Just remember to cut the door and windows out before you put it up on the tree. A lot harder to do the cutting on a vertical piece of plywood. The walls need less bracing than the floor. This is not going to be holding much of a roof, so minimal framing is required. just make it so that you can replace the plywood easily. An idea is to leave the framing exposed from the outside. That way you can stand on the treehouse floor as you do repairs.

you need a good sturdy tree with wide spreading branches that will hold a floor, thats a place to start, if you dont have that, you could try building legs to support the floor but as the tree moves im afraid the rest would buckle.
