You DO NOT need a router. You connect the two computers together via the LAN connectors, using a crossover cable.

It is a simple procedure using the Windows wizard, and it is most reliable, since there is no added equipment that could malfunction.

hi. some people will suggest using a crossover cable. this method is lengthy, unreliable and annoying, also, it means the computer with the internet connection MUST be on so the other can use it.

The method I use, and recommend, is using a Wireless ADSL router.

you plug the adsl cable into the router, and then connect your computers to the router, either through an ethernet cable or wireless USB dongle, or PCI card. both cost around £25 for a standard type, and both are really easy to install, although you need to go inside your computer for the PCI card.

you can then connect both computers to the internet, even if one is turned off, and share files, email (outlook 2003), printers, and cd/dvd/memorycard drives.

this method also means that if you get a 3rd computer you are already set up, and you don't need to add extra ethernet cards into your computers.

also, you won't need your modem, but if it is a ethernet modem, and NOT USB, you could purchase a cable router, or just a "wireless router", and plug your modem into that, although i wouldnt recommend it.

as a final note, xp and vista dont tend to get along well on a network, especially the printer sharing, due to driver conflicts, as I dound out, and had to pay another £400 upgrading my other two computers.

good luck either way. hope i have helped.

If you don't have broadband and you want them both to be able to simultaneously access the Internet that will be a problem. There was only one router, "webramp", that did that and I think its company was bought by a larger company so the product is no longer available.

If you just want to share data then hubs/routers are always going on sale for low prices. They take an Ethernet cable from each computer and tie them together. Once you have them plugged together, click on "do you want to setup a home network?" in windows help and they will describe the few steps required.

If you have broadband on one (sounds like you don't from your modem description) then you would put the hub/router between them and both could go through the router to the Internet.

Easiest thing is to buy a router. Wired or wireless, depending on your needs.

Then, set your modem-connected computer to share it's connection. You do this by: Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click on the appropriate one, Properties, Advanced, check "Internet Shared Connection" checkboxes.

However, if your modem is hooked to your computer via ethernet, then you can plug the MODEM into the router and then just access it from both machines.

Do you have Hi speed internet connection.???

mine comes through the phone line but not the phone. it goes to a adsl box.
from my adsl box a cord goes out to wireless broadband router. from the router a cord goes to my computer. the wireless part of the router beams everywhere and my wifes computer upstairs accesses the signal with a usb connected wireless receiver.

so I use internet when I want, so does she, it can be used at the same time and works great.
all computer stores have the router & usb receiver. just make sure both parts are same brand.
