Does this make you go "hmmmm"?

Question

There was an article on the front page of the newspaper about a poor family who could not afford to fix the furnace, therefore they had no heat. They had 4 space heaters plugged into a frayed extension cord. They had all 4 gas burners burning for heat. They had a smoke detector, but it was broken. The first sentence said that it was so cold in so&so's house, that the water in the dog's bowl was frozen. Also, the woman in the picture was wearing a short sleeve shirt. How many things are wrong here, or is it just me??

Oh, and the photo of the kitchen showed a coffee maker, a microwave, a television set, a toaster oven, name brand soda. . .etc. . .

this does sound odd. the only things i can think of is that the people did have a steady income before . during that time they bought typical thing such as you listed. they were most likely like many people and had little savings . a huge % of people don't have one months pay put away for hard times. if the man lost his job even if his utilities were all paid up it would only take as little as one month to have the utilities cut off if his credit with them was not perfect. i had this happen.
as for one part of the house being freezing and other parts hot that is most likely as a result of the space heaters. they do just what they are called heat a space. most often a small space . one room could be warm and the next one cold and the next freezing . hm mm its doesn't take much too take a person from OK to freezing in the north.

Well it is easy to look from the outside and ask this question because you don't have all of the facts. People often find themselves short of money to make repairs to things like a furnace because they live very close to the edge financially. Any unexpected expense can exceed already tight budgets. Looking at their possessions such as microwaves, televisions and such doesn't mean that the person can liquidate the items to have cash for the needed repairs. The woman in short sleeves could mean that the weather had warmed up, she was being interviewed at her neighbors or perhaps she didn't want her picture taken in her old sweater. Don't be to quick to judge.

I can see you have never been poor, be thankful but the picture is not odd, short sleeves may be all she had or her blood pressure could be high making her hot, depending on where they kept the dogs water it could be frozen because it was in a part of the house that was not being heated. Chris covered the last with his suggestion that possibly someone was kind enough to give them the few luxuries that they did have. I hope they recieved the help they so desperately needed. Thanks for bringing this silent issue to light.

Well perhaps they lost their jobs .That doesn't mean they always lived this way and food stamps buys the groceries .
So what is your point .Should they sell what they do have ?
