I started going Barefoot in my Junior year at High School. I was super popular because I had the nerve to do this, but the School
Hierarchy had problems with my Bare Feet. I was so insistant about going Barefoot that I was able to negotiate them into accepting a permission note from my parents, I was a good student, so they tolerated my Bare feet more easily. During my undergrad, and grad years, I ALWAYS went Barefoot, and like Philip, found compete acceptance for my Dirty Bare feet. Also,
my Bare Feet are always Dirty, but they are the most jet Black when going into supermarkets, malls and my mechanic. I now go Barefoot 24/7, and perform as a professional musician in public in my Bare Feet.

I went barefoot to all my classes, both undergrad, grad, and as a law student. You'd be surprised how accepted it is. Some campuses even allow nudity (Bennington in Vermont is the first that comes to mind, though they may have changed the tolerant policy).
My feet became a shade of grey after all day barefooting around campus. The black soles I got came from supermarkets, the street, some bars, etc. I am still a barefooter, wearing shoes only about 5% of the time.
If you are interested in the barefoot lifestyle, check out the following (it provides evidence that being barefoot in public is not illegal anywhere, in addition to tons of info. about the medical benefits):

Sure, do it all the time. Started out just in gym class, but then I just stopped putting them on after showerinf up. But now, once spring sets in I leave the shoes at home, and go bf all day. And yes, the soles get positively black after while but big deal... they wash off! Besides, my bf's think that's sexy anyway.

Only in PE; I wasn't a regular barefooter yet during my school & college years. But barefoot PE is the norm in my country and guess what -kids don't have a lot of foot fungus or warts! :)

Nope never tried it, we had a dress code. Besides, the floor is dirty, full of germs and that's nothing I want on my feel after a million people may have walked across spit, dog do doo or garbage.
Have a great day!
