a viola is like a violin and is held by the player the same way. however, it is usually longer and wider than a violin and the strings are pitched a fifth lower. the viola reads the alto clef.
the cello is larger, and is played between the player's knees. the pitches of the strings are the same as the viola, but an octave lower. the cello reads the bass clef.

The cello is deeper than the viola. The cello falls between the viola and bass for deepness. Also an obvous difference is one is incredibly bigger than the other. The cello is way bigger.

A viola is like a large violin. It is held about the same way. A cello sits on the floor and is like 5 feet tall.
