Hi!
The problem is..is it probably a scam. I don't care what amount it is..once you deposit it..there is a chance it will not only bounce..but it may reveal your account number to the scammer and they can come right back and draft the account. This is a well-known scam technique. If you really wanted to see..call the bank that is listed on the check and see if there are funds in that account. Chances are..it is a scam..plain and simple.

Well first of all if you were not expecting the check and do not have any idea why you are receiving the check then I would not cash it. They may have made a mistake and put a stop payment on it so then if you cash it, you would just be shooting yourself in the foot. I would look on the check to see with which bank the individual banks at and then take it to the bank and ask them what they think you should do.

If it came via UPS, there is a return address on the label. Send the check back with a note stating that it was delivered to the wrong person.

Byron H is right this is a common scam used to gain access to your bank account.

If it came UPS I'd call your local police department. If it came US Mail I'd call the local postmaster.

Most of the time these guys do use UPS to avoid involving the US Postal service because once they do that it immedietly becomes a federal crime.

Is the check made out to you? I'm guessing it isn't. Accordingly, you should contact the person that wrote the check and make arrangements to return it to them. Even if your name is on it, you shoukd take the time now to sort it out rather than risk the hassel of legal issues later.

Is it made out to you? If it's not, it could be a criminal act to attempt to cash it.

If it is made out to you, make sure that there's no language on the back of the check that says something like "By endorsing this check, you agree to pay _____ $____."
