Like the lyrics go in the song-

1) The French delight in fighting duels but women prefer men who lives and gives expensive jewels. (Dead men)

2) A kiss on the hand may be quite continental... [and} may be grand but it won't pay the rental on your humble flat or help you at the automat. (Things that have no monetary value)

3) Men grow cold as girls grow old, and we all lose our charms in the end. But square-cut or pear-shaped, these rocks don't loose their shape... (Fading beauty, charm, and shape)

4) Time rolls on, and youth is gone, and you can't straighten up when you bend. But stiff back or stiff knees, you stand straight at Tiffany's. (Aging)

5) There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer or when a hard-boiled employer thinks you're awful nice, He's your guy when stocks are high, but beware when they start to descend. It's then that those louses go back to their spouses. I've heard of affairs that are strictly platonic, and I think affairs that you must keep liaisonic are better bets. (Things that have undependable future value)

Diamonds! Diamonds!
But diamonds are a girl's best friend.

Diamonds are not my best friend. Nor the people who say that diamonds are a girls best friend, are my enemy. Never saw any reason to put such a value on any stone/gem, etc.

I don't think they are, but your question makes that qualification that IF they are, THEN. . . in which case, I'd have to say that IF diamonds were a girl's best friend, certainly poverty would be her worst enemy. It would prevent her from having her friends, and that's a formidable enemy indeed.
