No, they tried it years ago by putting all their money on Pele and went bankrupt. I don't see it doing any better. We are a country to involved in football, baseball and basketball. We are already "spread thin" enough that other sports kind of just get shoved to the back except for the occasional times such as Olympics etc.

Not a chance. Americans prefer exciting sports. soccer isn't. Beckham is a big star, and the initial effect will be an increase in ticket sales. But when your role is a great set-up man, people will tire of that quickly, and won't even care to see him after too long.

Pele made soccer famous in America,,, everyone else is following in his cleats,,, as for Beckham, he is riding out his retirement years on American soil, where the game lives for "big" names, not skilled play.

I don't think anyone can make soccer a famous sport in America but I do think he will help....He will definately help sell more tickets but not enough to make it a big deal

US football does no longer favor saving. we've a good and growing to be league with a rewarding employer sort. He will have the same success as Pele did with the New York Cosmos. Pele is a much better player by the way. I suspect the real reason is a chance to do some serious acting.
