I do not get if you love someone how you can not be in love with them "right now". So, where does that put you?

My ex told me the same thing sfter 16+years together. Honey--it's a crappy excuse used when they are too chicken to tell you the truth that they don't want to be in a relationship with you anymore. They think it won't hurt as bad if they try to candy coat it and throw in the L word. Walk away with your dignity.

There are many different kinds of loves. After 12 years, this person may feel that they love you meaning care about you very much and have a spot for you in their heart, but they are no longer be "in love" which are "Deeply or passionately enamored" feelings ( taken from an online dictionary)

The problem with how people view love today is they think they have to have the in love feelings forever. Love doesn't work like that. You have to work at it once those feelings either wear off or lessen. I think that this does not mean you are not in love with someone it just means you have to be willing to work at the relationship to have those feelings continue.

It is possible to love someone but not be IN LOVE with them. If it is truly after 12 years, than it seems one of you has changed. This is very common in couples. For example, I know a couple who has been together since high school. She was molested as a child by a family member, and didn't deal with it until much later in life when she already became an adult. Had she dealt with it before it would have made her a different person that she is today, but because she didnt come out with it(not her fault), she is now dealing with it. And of course she will be a different more stronger person that she was before. Now they are two totally different people. I hope this make sense....Listen to that person. At least they had the respect to tell you upfront and not hiude it from you

To love someone and not be in love with them means they still care about what happens to you, they still want the best for you, still care about how your day went -- but the sex is gone, the passion is gone, no more kisses good bye or hello. The intimate relationship is gone.

Could possible mean that they love you as a person and a dear friend, but nothing further than that. However this is a deep question and you need to get the true answer from the person who said this to you, obviously it hurt you and they need to know that.

Forget them and move on - they don't even have the decency to be honest after 12 years.

Does that mean, that it will change? That whole ebb and flow thing?? I'd say, work through it with them. 12 years is a long time to throw away.

It means that they care for you but don't have romantic feelings. I have always loved my wife, but there was a time that I wasn't in love (romantically) with her. If you're both willing to work at it you can recapture the "spark" and renew your romantic love.
