We are a nation of see or be seen and along those lines I pose this question. Do we make ourselves look handsome, pretty, or just plain good looking because of other people, more than doing it for ourselves? Or do we do this for our own pleasure? I don't know about other people, but sometimes I just go out not caring what other people are going to think of me and dress down big tim. Then on the other foot, I go out most of the time caring what other people are going think of when they see me. Can you imagine a world without make-up or fancy clothing and apparel? We just walk around for who we are.

GOOD QUESTION!!!!! I cannot answer for anyone else, but I get my good days and bad days. Sometimes I want to 'enhance' my looks because I do not feel pretty enough. Other days I do not give a hoot what others think of how I look. If I am at an important function, I want to look my best for both myself and the people I am with or represent. I used to get 'all prettied up" to go out and impress someone, but what is the reason for that? Sooner or later, if you stay with that person, they will see you as you really are, so why not START the relationship that way? I have become fairly comfortable with who I am an no longer need a lot of stuff to hide behind. I do like to buy clothes that flatter me rather than just buy because the style is 'in'.

I think we primarily do it for ourselves.

If we feel we've minimized our flaws and maximized our assets, then we have the confidence to walk out the door and hold our head up.

I think we should be forgiven if we like makeup, etc - I don't believe there is a a single culture in the world that is blind to a well groomed strong man or a smiling pretty girl - not even the Bushmen tribes in Africa!

Your body is a temple and you should make the effort.

Maybe it is these other people that are the mirror that they see themselves with, looking good for others is tied into their self worth. We are told to believe this is bad but is it really so horrible? We're social creatures, is the oppinion of others really such a bad thing to seek? And physical traits are only so deep, they don't have to crave the acceptance of everything, merely some recognition that they are special.
There's worse things in the world.

If that were the case, noone would ever reproduce. Would you want to bang someone who hasnt showered or shaved in days? The reason behind this attempt to look good is for one purpose, to attract the opposite(or same, in some cases)sex. Its called procreation, and is ingrained in all of us. This also happens all throughout the animal world. Male creatures display dominance to make them attractive to female creatures of their species.

It seems like people try to look good for others, but it's really for themselves. You see when others think we're looking hot and show that openly, it builds on our self esteem.

I do it for myself. It improves my self esteem when I feel I look good. If others happen to think I look good, also, that's just icing on the cake.

Yes - if you lived on a deserted island, you'd never put on mascara.
It's all about perception my dear. That's life, we'll never change.
