The cheapest housing is in rural America. In Nebraska, the Dakotas, Etc. In the major cities, you are going to pay around 100k. In smaller towns awayfrom the cities homes still sell for 30K or sometimes less.
In LA, New York etc. Even the crappiest neighborhoods areexpensive because of the land value. Otherwise a few rich people would buy every house, kick the tennents out and rebuild.

Some of the cheapest housing can be found in upper Michigan, rural Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Montana. Coincidentally, however, that's where the average salaries are also the lowest, so it's all a wash.

"If you want a housing bargain, head for the Lone Star State. The housing boom seems to have passed right over Texas. According to the Realtors' data, median prices are $147,000 in Dallas, $145,000 in Houston, and $138,000 in San Antonio. Those are remarkably low for large cities with healthy economies. It's no surprise that these cities also show up alongside College Station, Tex., as substantially undervalued in the Global Insight/National City study. Dallas, for instance, is 13% undervalued."-
If you would like to search for real estate in the Killeen, TX area visit my website at www.hiattrealty.net. I offer free MLS access that allows you to view all available area properties.

My house sits on the edge of a golf-course and we paid a premium just to have a view of the 9th hole. It probably isn't the cheapest alternative for us. If you want the cheapest you should probably find a neighborhood where gang people live and where drug dealers hang-out and the schools are real bad.

Certainly NOT in California. The other day a report came out that Raleigh NC had the best housing prices vs the best rate of pay and lowest unemployment rates. I know if you live in Alaska as a resident one receives some oil money each year. I believe it is something like $2,000 per year.

Most cities have slums that are relatively low in property value.
