Your desktop PC is connected to your usb adapter and router. Your desktop doesnt need to be wireless. To get your laptop connected to the internet through its wireless device however you need to upgrade your router to wireless.
Or you could get a wireless device for your desktop and connect your laptop to your desktop on a wireless network and let it connect to the internet through your desktop.
My advice go to where you got your desktop or laptop and they will explain it all to you depending on what you want to do and have access to with your laptop.

I believe you must install a wireless card in the PC to enable wireless networking. You may find a USB adaptor that will also do the same but I think the speed of data transfer is reduced.
here's one for $15

Yes. Both your options will work.
You can get USB adapter, or you can plug your router/access point directly into your pc.
