It's supposed to be the first letter of your last name, that's the way NJ does it, but here in PA we don't have any letters (guess there's not enough licensed drivers to get up to letters yet.)

that's not how it is here in Cali my last name starts with K but my drivers license starts with D!

I live here in Cali. and I have a letter C in the beginnign of my number. I think it might be when you received your DL or maybe where you first received it.
