Education! From pre-school through college, this could be big $$. However, that's often paid for by the parent for their child. As such, this could fall under the whole "raising children" aspect - from childbirth (as was mentioned) through college (and maybe beyond).

If it's something not alive (like a child or pet) and only for one's self (or one's self and partner), then other expensive items are furniture, entertainment systems (huge high def. or plasma TV's are still costly), a high-end computer (top models can still be $5K+), vacations, clothing (some designer clothes could cost thousands), a wedding (dress, tuxes, reception and honeymoon could cost thousands, even hundreds of thousands!), etc.

Hope this helps!

Furniture. To outfit your whole house, you could spend way more than you would on a car or anything else. Ikea is an awesome store with something for everyone.

I don't believe you would categorize medical expenses as a purchase. That said, I'll go with a boat.
