I would take Chris to ride bumper cars, so he can realize that some car accidents can be fun.

Fear can't be "unlearned". The only way to help a person get over their fear is to give them time (allow them to do it at THEIR pace) and show them that they aren't going to automatically be injured when they get in the car. Maybe start out with him just sitting in the car. Then move on to driving down the street, then about 2 miles of driving, etc. Just take slow paces and realize that he may take a while to be comfortable again. Just remember, DON'T PUSH HIM.

Fears such as this are usually handled by using a machine that most therapist's have. The machine is attached to your index finger, and your level of axiety or panic is HEARD by the person having the test. I had aggoriphobia, and my psychologist did this for me: He would tell me I was safe at home, and my 'sound' buzzer would go to a nice low buzzing. He would tell me I was at the front door, and my sound buzzer would start SCREAMING a noise. I was afraid, I had panic attacks. Your friend sounds as though he could benefit from this type of procedure. With myself, my doctor would tell me to relax, and the machine was sure to be loud if I wasn't..........so I tried really hard to keep the noise from the machine down....................until, finally, I could leave my home without panic. I had learned to handle the panic, as Chris needs to learn this, as well. I would never, ever tell a person with panic phobias to 'just relax", 'your fine', anything like that. A panic attack is seriously mentally and physically making the person totally UNABLE to react normally, no matter what is said. Chris may be able to have therapy done with "victim's of Crime' dept. If he was a victim in this accident, not the cause of it,,,,has panic attacks..............he needs counseling and such that the State capital Victim's Of Crime will pay for! Take advantage of this, and get Chris ABLE to do what he used to do without panic. Good Luck!

I over came my fear of getting in a car and on a Honda Express I once had by getting back in and on one. Over time the flash backs and fearing an accident again, eased up. Eventually, to where I rarely have those fears.
