I use to have two turtles, the one that is currently on her own was brought last. The other two turtles died and she didn't. Is it possible that bringing a third turtle created something for them to feel threatened? So now she's alone and I'm afraid that she might be lonely. What should I do?

Yes something would happen. You will kill two turtles instead of the one you all ready are killing. Turtles are very hard to care for properly and they are not for everyone. From what you've said they are probably not for you.

I agree with the first answer, if you do indeed have a true sea turtle then it is on the endangered species list or threatened species list which would make them illegal to own. The fact that you say you have killed 2 allready is not saying too much for your sense of responsibility to ecology and the world around you. I would contact a turtle rescue program in the area in which you captured this turtle and turn it over to them. I am sorry if this sounds harsh but these animals are diminishing in the wild and the fact that you captured 3 and killed 2 and are now worried that the one remaining may be lonely does not help their prospects any. Please do what is right and turn the turtle over to the proper people.

I'm assuming since as was already mentioned, sea turtles are VERY illegal, that you have an aquatic turtle. If the turtle are dieing you probably have an enclosure that is too small. If you over crowd turtles they get stressed very quickly not to mention that the ammonia levels would go way up very fast. I would get a much larger enclosure, and keep it very clean. Turtles are dirty animals, and will mess up a tank very fast.

Before you get a friend for your turtle, get a VERY large tank, clean it and make sure the first one is perfectly healthy, this means vet checked and monitored for a few months. Turtles are not group animals, and will require a large set up for more than one.

Sea turtles are both illegal and hard to keep as pets. You probably have something different, like perhaps a Red-ear slider.

Try http://www.austinsturtlepage.com to help ID the turtle and find out the care requirements.

Turtles, however, really don't need companions.

If you truly have a sea turtle, please turn her in to a breeding center so that she can help restore her species. Sea turtles are endangered and are open ocean animals, they aren't well suited for the average household.

If you have a freshwater turtle, be sure you know what type you have before you add another one-they may have different requirements.

As for the negative comments by other readers-People-why don't you try teaching instead of preaching?

A sea turtle? Yeah right. If you're telling the truth someone who knows you who knows you have it needs to report you to the proper authorities. Or you need to report yourself. If you go with the second option you -might- only get a warning about it. To tell you how serious this is, you could get fined -AND- put in jail just for taking hatched eggshells off the beach. Don't just go let it go, either, because now it's probably gotten used to being in captivity (dumb*ss), and will need to learn how to actually take care of itself before it can (maybe if it's lucky and you haven't ruined it or gotten it sick and it's on it's way out already) be let go. What the hell were you going to do with it when you died anyway? And yes, that's worded correctly, because that turtle has the potential to live a WHOLE hell of a lot longer than you.

If I don't stop now, I'll just keep going......

If you really do have sea turtles you need to give them to a rescue of some sort they are endangered and are illegal to own. They have very specific needs and must have a VERY large tank. Please find someone who cares for sea turtles and give the turtle to them.

I doubt that your first two turtles died of "threat". Introducing a new playmate can be stressful, but I doubt that it was so stressful as to cause their deaths.

Your newer turtle could be a carrier of some disease that made the other two ill, however, so it's possible that you need to get her a checkup to make sure she's healthy before you invest in new tankmates. While you're at the vet, ask them your questions about loneliness and see what they recommend.

sea turtles are very illegal to own. You need to get in touch with a rescue group and give it up. They have very specilized diets, and needs.

The others died because of their needs. They cannot be cared for in aquariums less than 300 gallons... more around 1000 gallons. HUGE
