I personally think it is, and that people are just trying to be ignorant about it not being a sport, I think a lot of it is people being a little sexist too. Hell they call golf a sport and it it involves a lot less physical work than cheerleading.

I have done all kind of different activities, some sport and some not. My rule has always been... is if the participants direct actions dictate who wins... then it is a sport. However, If a judge or panel of judges decides who wins... then it is not who was the best, but who was the best according to the opinion of the judges. These types of activities that are decided by judges are ones that I consider an Art, not a sport. Sports have referrees and umpires, but they do not say who wins, they only enforce the rules.
For everyone who thinks I insulted cheerleading and such other activities by calling it an art, please realize I consider an Art a higher calling than a sport. Sport is just a physical game... you can play it ugly and still win. With an Art, you have to do it right, and make it look good.

But this is why I consider cheerleading an art, not a sport.

Cheerleading is not a sport. It's an activity, a hobby, or a common interest. There is no overall competition in cheerleading, I mean there is some big competition or something, but the cheerleaders purpose is to cheer on the team and fans, and to compel the players to work harder.

I don't think cheerleading is a sport, but I think cheerleaders are atheletes, just because I consider sports something that hasa definite winner: baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. , but cheerleading, figure skating, and gymnastics have winners picked by judges. I just think a sport has to be a game with a definite winner. I'm a cheerleader and I know how athletic you have to be, I don't think it's a sissy thing.

Cheerleading is not a sport because without the other sports we wouldn't need it. Cheerleaders cheer for sports.

UGGH! all those people who say its not a sport are WRONG! cheerleading is its own sport, we dont waste our time cheering on the sidelines for other teams..we have our own competitions. You need to have alot of muscle and strength to be able to do it and you can get very injured. We throw people in the air and catch them and hold girls up in the air with one arm and do amazing gymnastics. So when all you people are throwing and lifting balls were throwing and lifting other athletes.

Yes it is...a sport by definition is:

an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Used by itself, sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing).

Cheerleading seems to fit all these characteristics, therefore, I would say it is a sport.
