there's no software involved, just get a mini-ide controller and plug your laptop hdd into the desktops usb 2 hub...

if both're together then you can do networking via cable only between these two. i think its fastest way to trasfer.. But for this you need networking cable between two computer and insert at LAN connection port. And enjoy the fastest sharing and copy, only abit slower than copying files from one HDD to another in same computer.

just go to walmart and get a USB drive (flash Drive) You can get one for like $25 and take it where ever you go. I love the things. I have three of them myself for work and school.

I would say USB 2.0, that way you don't have to worry about the network function.
