It's funny... some people are inclined to speak twice as loudly into a cell phone than they would speak into a regular landline phone. Their voice then become so muffled that it is impossible to understand a word they say.

Then if the connection is choppy because they've travelled out of range, these people are inclined to speak even louder - as if that could possibly improve the situation in any way.

Just wondering - Why do people do this?

It is amusing. I think it is a lack of confidence in those new fangled gagets. Then too, it seems to be self perpetuating, cause it the other guy is shouting, you suppose He can't hear YOU, so you talk louder yet.

There can be various reasons to speak loudly while on cellphones : 1> Some old friend called up and in excitement u start up conversation "loud" ... and don't realize it :) 2> U r not in some quiet place and since u yourself cant hear properly in the noise u expect that the next end person is also not able to hear properly and start speaking loudly. 3> Show off :P 4> Hearing problem. 5> Network/Handset Problem 6> Some get into habit of speaking loud on cellphone. 7> Some have a habit of speaking loudly whether they speak on cellphone or a person next to them ;). These things can be quite annoying sometimes. Me myself speak so loudly when I am in middle of a traffic :P ......

well... im no doctor, psychologist or whatsoever, but id just like to share my opinion on this... ^___^

every time a person talks on a cell phone, they always tend to shout, probably due to the environment...
specially when youre on busy streets and everyone keeps on talking, you just easily form the idea of being overpowered by a million voices all speaking together..
hence, you heighten the volume of your voice to maximum...

other than that, i also think that since when u speak personally to someone, you always hear your voice and the volume it creates, there is no tendency to alter it or to even maximize every wave... unlike when you're using a telephone/cell phone, your other ear is covered by such intstrument;
that probably gives u a weird idea of not hearing urself that clear, causing a rather increase on your voice's volume...

Usually when your on a cell phone...your in your car and it seems louder then it does at home so for some reason you talk louder. I never do for some reason. When you are at home its quiet so you don't feel the need to yell.

Bad reception, faulty connections and tons of feedback. Landlines are more stablized.
