Are guinea pigs a good pet for children?

Guinea Pigs require a lot of care an attention. Yes Guinea Pigs are great pets for kids 8+ and no Guinea Pig are not so great pets for kids 7 and under. Because of the care and attention required, especially if you want the kids to take care of the Guinea Pig, they are just to young.

Guinea pigs need attention from their owners twice a day for an hour. Or they get depressed and become ill. They need an owner who is observant and knows when the Guinea Pig maybe sick.

It depends on the childs age. Usually a child around 10 can understand. Guinea pigs are fragile animals and their bones can be broken easily if squeezed too tight. They require lots of attention and care. They must be kept out of drafts as they have no immune systems. They require regular vet visits for their teeth to be checked and nails clipped. I have adopted many guinea pigs in the past from families who thought they could care for them. Some were abused. Think twice. Stay away from pet stores.
