For anyone who knows, is there such a city in N. Carolina that has good schools, down to earth people-not snobs or stuck ups, (but not people who get in your business all the time either), middle-aged -(40's), good job market, safe, decent and just plain normal people with stuff to do?

Raleigh is not a bad place to live with everything you need. Mountains to the west, beach closer to the east.

There are lots of places in North Carolina that will meet your needs. If you are looking for a smaller community, Asheville North Carolina is a good place to settle down. It's what I would consider a tourist town because of the Biltmore Estate, the scenic Blueridge parkway and the gorgeous mountains brings people from all over country.

Once people come here for a visit they like it so much that a lot of them return to live. So the population is a nice variety of people and personalities from all over. Because of this there isn't a strong accent or hokey hillbilly types.

It's an affluent city but I wouldn't say there are "great" job opportunities here unless you are in the medical field. There are tons of medical practices and two hospitals.

The schools are above average. Teacher to children ratios are low. I find the people down to earth. There are snobs and stuck ups but they are easy to avoid because there are so few of them. Activities in the area are extremely normal. Restaurants and clubs are in abundance. There's movies and concerts too. TONS of shopping!!

The people are very eclectic, artistic and diverse. Strong church community but open to alternative lifestyles. Politically liberal but there are a few conservatives.

The weather here is mild all year long. The area attracts people from farther south (FL, GA, AL) who build summer homes to escape the heat of where they're from. It also attracts people from up east who build winter homes to escape the harsh winters. Lots of weekend and part time residents also. Even though it's in the mountains there isn't nearly as much snow as you'd think. What we do get doesn't linger long.

Asheville isn't a big "one team" sports town, because people come from all over the place everyone seems to root for different teams without incident. We do have a minor league baseball team the Asheville Tourists.

If you are interested in a larger city that fits the description you described I would suggest checking out Knoxville Tennessee. It's not in North Carolina but borders it. Has the same amenities that Asheville has with the added opportunities a larger city offers.

If you'd like to research more on Asheville or any of the other cities people recommend check out bestplaces.net. They break down a city into many categories and compare them to national averages.

Lake Norman about 20 outside of Charolette, it is everything you listed with the benefit of having a fully recreational lake.
