In windows you use the defrag tool. You can do this using the gui by clicking START -PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - SYSTEM TOOLS - DISK DEFRAGMENTER.
You can also use the command line version in a cmd window.

Our Windows XP has this defragmentation mode. Our Hard disk moreover similars like a Cd disk in operation. If u erase a content on the hard drive , and if u install a new appliacation it wont occupy the space u erased before , instead it will hangupto the sequencial place available after the last file in hard disk. Partition is just like splitting the memory to two or more means..but defragmentation is like joining all installed or pasted components which are splitted at various place on a drive say C: or D: or E: or F: or any to make it sequential order to increase the speed of hard drive data opening. So if u wanna defragment u r hard drive , choose the disk u need and if u are a WINDOWS XP user Eg. If u wish to defrag C: just go My computer and right click on the C: drive and select PROPERTIES and a menu box will appear and choose and click TOOLS tab...There u will find the DEFRAGMENT button for that drive..Just click it it will verify disk and after it u should Click Defrag button after checking of Disk..So it automatically defrags...But donot run any applications or programs when Disk defragmentation going on. It may corrupt u r OS if u do so..

What disk defragmentation does it puts files into order so that the files can be accessed faster for example when the computer save a file called ABCD it might be put on the disk like CABD and what disk defragmentation would do it to put in order and move the files next to each other. It takes longer to open files if they are not in order or next to each other.

After continuous use ( writing and deleting ) the files written on the hard disk are not continuous, have gap in between. Fragmentation corrects this problem.
Partitioning of the disk is making required partition on a hard disk.-Example 80 GB disk can be portioned to four 20, 20,30,10 ( as u like )

When you use a computer and you delete and save things your disk will become fragmented. Why ...
Just say you have a 1 meg file that you just saved. Now you delete it. You computer marks that space for reuse (does not actually erase the file). now you have a 999k file you want to save it saves that file in that one meg space. Now you have a small "fragment" that can be reused but it is not likely unless you have a very small file. There are little fragments all over you disk drive once it is put in heavy usage. Lets just say you want to save a file that is bigger, it will save the first 1meg in that space and then the rest in another space. They will be linked by pointers. With pointers pointing elsewhere you must follow them to get the entire file that you are trying access which slows down your operations. De fragmenting puts entire files in one continuous space on your disk so you drive can read it without having to jump all over your disk drive.
Partitioning really just slices your disk into different chunks. Lets just say you have a 10 gig drive. You can say I want 2 gigs for this 3 gigs for that, and 5 for something else.
Hope that helped

Defragging means taking all of the fragmented files and combining them, thus saving disk space and keeping your files organized. Partitioning is exactly that, split up your hard disk to install a new OS (operating system)

Simply put, your computer scatters files all over your hard drive. The more scattered things become, the slower it is to access information. See the link below for a more detailed description.
Defragementation can be using a program designed to do just that. check out Symantec which has always worked for me, or search the web for other alternatives.
Partitioning is simply treating 1 physical disk drive as 2 or more logical drives.

it is the process of arranging your files in your hard disk in a way so that the most used is retrieved faster.
to defrag in windows, start, all programs, accessories, system tools and then disk defrag. select the drive you want to optimize and wait.
better do this on a freshly booted computer with as little programs running at the same time.
partitioning a disk is kind of LOGICALLY (not physically) splitting one hard drive to two or more hard drives

you can defragment by right-click on your c drive under my computer. go to properties. click on tools. think of defrag as this. whenever you save a file, run a program, etc. it stores information about it in memory. memory isn't always in order. you might save a file to memory location x. you are running ie which is stored in location a. it doesn't matter. defragging attempts to get rid of the gaps and move everything together so the only gaps is at the end. this make things run a lot faster because it is not searching all over the place for the next memory location. make sense?

Defragment means connecting fragments of every file beside each other; because when you delete a file it is been removed leaving it's place in the drive empty causing fragments to be created.
defragment increases the speed at which the disk reads the data.
It's already different from partioning because partioning is the process of making partions of data storing called "Drives" and putting the File-System type(FAT,NTFS,SWAP,..........) which the data will be stored in it's way

As you create and delete files the new one may be broken into pieces to fill in the holes. Defragmentation takes those pieces and puts them back together.
