Can someone explain to me why when Obi-wan and Yoda died, both bodies disappeared at the moment of death. Yet when Qui-gon and Darth Vader were killed, their bodies did not disappear.

Frosty62.........I was also totally confused as to why the difference between the deaths. I watched Return of the Jedi, Phantom Menace & Attack of ther Clones this past Sunday on HBO. From what I could figure out Qui-gon was a much stronger Jedi than Obi-wan. So when he died, I expected him to disappear the same as Obi-wan.

This answer is going to blow all of your minds, but Darth Vader didn't kill Obi Wan. He became one with the Force just before Vader's lightsaber passed through him. Just as Yoda did. That's why they disappeared. However, Qui-Gon had yet to learn the technique to become one with the Force and to communicate with the living (which is just touched upon at the end of Episode 3). He was the first of recent fallen Jedi to learn to communicate after his passing. This is also breifly shown in Episode 2 during Anakin's slaughter of the Tusken camp. (You can clearly hear Qui Gon's voice yelling, "Anakin! Stop!")

As for Darth Vader, it is believed by some that the remaining organic parts of his body had disappeared, and Luke burned the suit and mechanical parts for ritualistic purposes. It is unlikely, though, that Vader knew of this technique, indicated by his surprise when Obi Wan vanished during their duel on the Death Star.

Their apparitions appeared only to Luke at the end of "Return of the Jedi." A younger Anakin appeared (in the special edition only,) prior to his fall to the Dark Side.

*Update for answer below* - Darth Plagueis not only had the ability to control the midi-chlorians and stop death, but to also create life. It is speculated that this method was taught to Plagueis' apprentice, Darth Sidious. More speculation involves this method and the birth of Anakin Skywalker, since there was no father. This had been the plan since day one for Anakin's destiny of becoming a Sith lord.

The ability that Yoda was talking about of being able to communicate with Jedi that have become one with the Force has nothing to do with the tragedy of Darth Plagueis. This is an ability that only Force sensitives can use, which is why Luke Skywalker (and possibly Leia) was the only one who could see the apparitions of Anakin, Yoda, and Obi Wan at the end of "Return of the Jedi."

I know alot have already said it but it is because they became one with the Force. What everyone else has failed to mention is that this was the very power Darth Plagis, the one Palpatine and Anakin were talking about at the play, was trying to obtain. If you pay attention at the end of the movie Yoda hints to Obi Wan that Qui Gon (remember he tells Obi Wan to go visit and old friend on Tantoine) actually figured it out, which would have made him the first to become one with the living Force.

If obi-wan and Yoda were more in touch with the force, then how come we could see Darth Vader hanging out with yoda and Obi-Wan at the end. That would mean he went to the same place. I was wondering the same thing. I think it just didn't fit the scene.

Obi-Wan and Yoda were fully in touch with their midichlorians, but Qui-Gon and Darth Vader were not, it all depends on their strengths in contact with the other side

when jedi masters die, their bodies are absorbed into the force with a flash of light. however, you can still come back from the force and appear. coming back after death to appear is different from having your body absorbed into the force. seperate, completely different. (unless youre a really, really powerful jedi knight who has learned how to do that-only example of that that i can think of is ulic qel-droma)

I think you're looking too much into this.

I hear where you're comin from, but I don't think it really matters.
