First of all "love" comes from the french word(s) l'oeuf, which means the egg which means zero (egg and zero being roughly of the same shape!). Love, 15, 30, 40, are used in scoring for each game, each set is up to six games. First to get to six wins the set. Unless there is a tie at 5 all, then the set is up to 7. But at six all, there is the 7 point tie breaker. Matches can be a single set, best of 3 or 5 sets ..... All that aside the love, 15, 30 and 40 was conceived a long time ago by early tennis geniuses as a way to differentiate and not create any confusion between game score and set score. I think when tennis was first started there was a difference in math, not used in America that made sense. That is just what my tennis coach told me anyway. I just know that originally it made sense and now it doesn't.

Thats the best i have for you.

It all started with the fact that the players wanted to be snotty, so the picked up using French. Including the use of the word "Love."
These are the closest English words for the original French.
