I'm happy with Verizon. I recommend you avoid the new 'ATT' (formerly known as Cingular). Cingular spends a lot of money on advertising, but when I had their service it wasn't very good and their employees were rude.

Well, you're asking 3 different things, and you're going to get 3 different answers:

1) Best for Travel is most likely going to be a GSM phone, granted you get your phone unlocked first so you can use a SIM card from wherever you're going (country wise). If you're staying within the states, then Verizon or Sprint. Verizon covers more area, Sprint covers more populated areas...that's from an old yahoo article from a few months ago.

2) Fewest dropped calls - Advertised is Cingular...which is a lie. Research shows Sprint as having the fewest dropped calls. Google "Telephia and Cingular". Then read this article.

http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070221/FREE/70221008/1008

3) Best plans for the money - this is going to be Sprint or T-Mobile. If you need lots of minutes, then T-Mobile...just keep in mind the article that you read from rcrnews.com. If you are able to get on a SERO plan from Sprint, then that (in my opinion) is much better than nearly every plan out there. I have a 500 minute sero plan which includes 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7 pm, unlimited power vision (broadband) internet, free roaming, and unlimited mobile to mobile for $30. Combine that with Sprint's $5 for every 30 minutes over, as opposed to $.45/minute with Cingular and Verizon, and $.40/minute with T-Mobile, you'll be saving quite a bit of money.

If you want trendy, go with Cingular or T-Mobile. If you want reliable, go with Verizon or Sprint.

Personally, I like Cingular/ATT. I've been with them since they were known as Cellular One. At least, here in the Caribbean, they are the ones with the best reception. The service those suck a bit, but they have always resolved my problems. In the states the best ones are T-mobile and Verizon. In other parts around the world, like Europe, Cingular is one of the best, known as Orange though.
As far as plan rates, in my case, we have 5 phones on the same account, 5000 minutes, rollover minutes, unlimited minutes between cingular phones, unlimited calling night/weekends, free roaming in the states, we can call any cell or land line within the states including puerto rico, make and receive intl calls, plus, media bundle and insurance on the phones (all 5) and we never pay over $200. I couldn't find a better deal anywhere.
If anybody knows of one though, let me know!!
:-)
Hope it helps!

T mobile hands down. I have had it for over a year now on the family plan and it provides great service and price.
