I think that this behavior is more common in people who are on heavy medication. They're probably acting as irrationally as anyone would on such medication, except that their responses are likely shifted towards aggresion in an effort to survive. They simply aren't making sense and want to live.

I think it's because they are (literally) fighting for their life; trying to stay alive.

they're in shock.
it's their body's way of over-acting in such fight or flight situations.
